How to Keep the Winter Indoor Fun – Story Time in Metro Atlanta

childrensbooksAh, winter. It’s my favorite season to curl up with a good book or 5, make a pot of coffee in the middle of the afternoon, and relax. By myself. Of course, sometimes the 3 kids have something to say about that. So when “by myself” is not an option, we enjoy grabbing a stack of books and reading together on the couch. But sometimes, when we’ve done all of the couch snuggling (and fort building and board game playing and every other kind of indoor entertainment) we can handle, we need to get out of the house. And since books=life, we often find ourselves in a good bookstore for story time. Here are some of the best bookstore story times in metro Atlanta!

Fox Tales Book Shoppe in Woodstock (my neck of the woods) has so much great stuff going on! They host author events, writing workshops, and a fantastic storytime! Every Saturday at 11 a.m. they read, sing and have fun. Sometimes they even have authors come and visit!

Little Shop of Stories in Decatur has 3 story times to choose from every week. Tuesdays at 11 a.m. for the non-school crowd, Sundays at 3 p.m. for weekenders and Thursdays at 7 p.m. with milk and cookies! Check out their website for more great events and a slew of kids book clubs!

If you’re looking for something truly unique, check out The Wren’s Nest in downtown! This former home of Joel Chandler Harris (legendary author of the Uncle Remus stories) hosts storytelling every Saturday at 1 p.m. It’s included with their modest price of admission and is a one-of-a-kind Atlanta experience!

Many of the metro area Barnes and Noble Bookstores offer story times. Most branches offer a Saturday morning (11 a.m.) story time and another weekday time. Sometimes there are special guests and events and sometimes it’s just plain stories. Either way, your kids are sure to have fun!

Of course, if none of these bookstores are in your neighborhood, you can always check out your local library. Whether it’s for story time or just to peruse the shelves, our library is one of our favorite places to hang out on a chilly winter day. And it’s the cheapest place to grab a giant stack of books for your next couch snuggling afternoon of reading!
