Consignment sales are a way of life for moms in the south – and for good reason! They can be one of the best ways to score great deals on kids clothes, shoes and accessories, and there’s one happening nearly every weekend in the greater Atlanta area. Here are four ways to help you get the most bang for your buck and enjoy your consignment shopping experience. And, to get you set to save, we’re giving away $15 to spend at the Tots to Tweens Fall/Winter Consignment Sale happening this Saturday, August 27. Save Big at Consignment Sales

1. Make a plan.

Some of our area’s consignment sales boast 400 or more sellers – the selection can be huge! And with items moving quickly off shelves and racks, this isn’t a place to window shop. Before you head out, make a list of the toys, gear and clothing sizes and types that you’re looking for. When you arrive at the sale, head first to the toys and gear sections to see what they have on your list. Inventory tends to move more quickly in those sections, so it makes sense to quickly size up what’s for sale in those areas before spending more time combing through clothing racks and shelves of shoes. Tip: some sales will allow you to set aside larger/oversize items for up to 30 minutes while you finish your shopping. Ask if this is an option.

2. Go first. Or last.

There are deals and steals to be had anytime at a consignment sale – but for major bargains, go as early as possible or as late as possible. For early birds, you get top pick of everything for sale, with a lot less competition for those hot items in excellent condition. And if you’re in the market for a high-demand item, like a pack and play or Halloween costumes, going early is a must. Pre-event shopping and early sale hours are often a perk for first-time moms, teachers, and members of the group sponsoring the sale. Early shopping passes may also be available on Faceback, or with a small fee that’s donated to cause associated with the sale.

If you can wait, nearly every consignment sale offers discounted shopping in the final hours. Although not all sellers will opt to have their items marked down during the sale, I’ve found that most clothes are at least 50% off at the end, and there are still plenty of good quality pieces to be had in a variety of sizes. This is a great approach if you’re looking for every day clothing or to supplement your child’s wardrobe with some seasonal basics.

3. Are you a seller?

Selling ain’t easy, but it sure can be worth it – especially if you have infants or multiples! The benefits of selling at a consignment sale can go beyond your share of the proceeds. Sellers often get special shopping hours and other perks. Tip: most sales offer even more cash back to sellers that volunteer during the sale. For example, sellers at the Tots to Tweens Fall/Winter Consignment Sale event can earn up to 100% of their proceeds based on volunteer hours AND get private shopping hours before the sale opens to the public. Tip: most consignment sales require sellers to use wire hangers. You can almost always score some free from a fellow mom via Facebook – or hit up your dry cleaner around the corner for their extras.

4. Shop like you mean it.

After you make a plan for the consignment sale, you’ve got to dress the part. Some events are held indoors with air conditioning, some are held in community centers with some items displayed outdoors. When you factor in crowded aisles, it can get a little stuffy at the sale. Wear layers and sneakers, and leave the kids and strollers at home. Bring your own bags, baskets and totes for purchases, along with plenty of cash (this will save you money on the fees many sales pass along for using debt/credit cards).

As a mom of boy/girl twins, the Tots to Tweens event is at the top of my list twice a year. In addition to high quality clothes, this is the place to look for coordinating outfits plus seasonal gear, baby accessories, toys and supplies in sets of two or more.  To win $15 to spend at this sale, enter on our Facebook page by liking our page and commenting on the Giveaway announcement!

Great advice! I would add, grab all the clothes you like quickly, then find a place to sort out the keepers. Don’t make decisions at the rack because you don’t want to miss out on the next outfit.
