Stone Mountain Village: My Sweet Potato Cafe Experience

Saturday afternoon started out like any other day except my middle child was visiting with his grandparents. Imagine my surprise when my step-mom called and asked if they could get the baby too. I shouldn’t have been nearly as excited as I was, but sleeping sounded so good. Ultimately, though, that sleep never happened. Instead, hubby and I opted to go out on a lunch date and Sweet Potato Cafe is where we landed.

Stone Mountain Village is home to Sweet Potato Cafe. The cafe is a literally a house that has been redesigned to accommodate restaurant style seating. We were beyond surprised to see how packed it was, so we had to sit outside on the front porch to enjoy our meal. We had a very sweet waitress who was the epitome of southern charm. I could listen to her southern drawl all day and be content. The menu had a great selection of southern cuisine that I’ve always wanted to try.

Out of the vast selections available, my choices were:

Appetizer:

Fried Green Tomatoes w/Fresh Veggie Compote

Entree:

Garlic Pesto Chicken Sandwich and Sweet Potato Fries

Beverage:

ACE Hard Cider

The food was excellent! Living in Georgia has introduced me to cuisine I’ve only seen in movies. For instance, ever since I watched the movie Fried Green Tomatoes, I always wanted to try them. Visiting the Sweet Potato Cafe gave me the opportunity to do just that. I don’t generally like tomatoes but the fried green tomatoes are crispy and have a sweet, tangy flavor; this translates to YUM! Awesome plus? Sitting next to a Kathy Bates lookalike!

Maybe it’s the fact that I hadn’t been out on a date since I was 9 months pregnant or that I have been feeling blah after returning to work; whatever it was, I had a great time. I keep saying I’m going to explore the Atlanta Metro area, specifically Stone Mountain since this is where I reside, but I haven’t done much of that in the 2 years I’ve been here. It was nice to make good on my goal.

What’s up next? I’m not sure, but I can’t wait to tell you guys all about it! What are some of your favorite food spots in Atlanta?

  1. I’m glad I’m not the only one who hasn’t tried fried green tomatoes! I got the strangest looks when I admitted that recently to a store clerk trying to sell me batter. =) Glad you had such a fun time! Fun read!

  2. Growing up in South Florida, I had no idea what grits were until I moved to GA. And they are SO delicious! I love fried green tomatoes, too! This sounds like a great place to eat!
