Keep Moms in the Picture- Disney Edition

Keep Moms in the Picture {Disney Edition} | Atlanta Area Moms BlogI have been loving all of the #KeepMomsInThePicture posts on social media and decided to create a Disney Edition. This idea hit home for me when my family was in Disney World recently. Amidst all of the riding and eating and show-attending, we also took TONS of pictures. Pictures in front of the iconic castle, pictures with characters, pictures on our favorite rides. One of the things I love about Disney is that their photographers will take pics of your family, with YOUR camera for FREE! That’s right- even if you don’t purchase their photograph package, they will take your pics.

Now, usually at these spots, I was handing off items to sign and keeping up with the sharpie, juggling a backpack and a camera. Because #momlife. After taking the pictures on my own at our first few character meet and greets, my middle daughter said, “Mom! You come be in the picture, too!” And of course, the friendly Disney cast member offered to take my camera and snap some photos with me included.

After our photo-op with Kylo Ren, my youngest eagerly asked, “Are you going to put that one in the book?” The last time we did Disney, I compiled the best pictures from the trip into a photo book that my kids STILL look through regularly. I replied that yes, of course, Kylo Ren would go in the book.

Today, as I was uploading all the photos to my computer, I stopped to look at a few with Mom included. At first, I was focused on my sweaty face, my “I just got soaked on a water ride” hair, the bags under my eyes. But then I took a minute to just put myself back in that spot, standing next to Merida with my girls, snapping a selfie in front of the castle with my son, laughing as Rapunzel marveled at my daughter’s painting of her. And I was able to see what my kids see in these pictures- mom, family, memories.

In the coming months and years, my kids will never look through our Disney Book and say, “Wow, Mom. You really should have fixed your hair.” Or, “You look kind of tired. Did you forget your makeup?” No. They will look at them and remember how we screamed and held our hands up on Everest. How we rode Star Tours four times and Juddy was the Rebel Spy. How we laughed and loved and had fun.

With that in mind, here’s my resolution to keep moms in the picture- from now on, when I look at pictures with me in them, I will remember those things as well. Not how my hair wasn’t right or how I looked frumpy in that sweater. But instead, how blessed I was in that moment, with those people, in that place.

  1. Yesss! I have a hard time remembering to this for all the reasons you mentioned… but you’re right, my kids are not going to care about how I look or feel – they’ll just want to “see” me.
