Gretchen’s Children’s Shop

Gretchens Front Door

There are few sweeter things than a newborn in a soft Pima cotton day gown or little siblings in a matching smocked pinafore and jon jon complete with knee socks.

Being born in the South my mom dressed me in beautiful dresses with frilly lace and ruffle socks to match.  Mom saved a few pieces but when it came time to dress my oldest daughter as a newborn, I knew I was going to need to go shopping. Doesn’t every little girl need a complete wardrobe of pink, delicate smocking, frilly lace, and all the bows to match?! Fortunately enough, each of my two daughters came with a head full of hair and bright chocolate brown eyes – every girl mom’s dream for playing dress up!

They have one of the best selections of newborn gowns in town. And must-have precious bonnets to complete the look.

When I started looking for some special things to buy I knew I had to go to Gretchen’s.

If you’re from Atlanta or only lived in the area for a few years, you probably know about Gretchen’s – a local children’s boutique that has been around since 1952 (whoa!). Gretchen’s is a family owned and operated neighborhood store that carries a vast variety of sweet southern clothing, toys, and gifts for infants and children.

Gretchen's can outfit your kid for any occasion, including your family beach trips!

Entering Gretchen’s you will always be greeted with a warm smile by a kind-hearted woman with a genuine willingness to help find that special outfit or gift.  My husband’s grandmother worked at Gretchen’s for over a decade. While meeting with Anne Ames, the current owner of the store, she said she remembered Joyce quite fondly and said their sock display has never looked the same since she stopped working there. I love this fun little story and connection to the nostalgic children’s store as its long tenure as a staple of Atlanta families shows the timeless styles they offer.

They have the cutest play clothes perfect for preschool or a day at the park.

Because Gretchen’s has been around for over 60 years they have seen many generations of people walk through their vibrant blue door. On any given day you can find grandmothers shopping for their grandchildren, new mommas-to-be, and visitors from across the state and region all stopping in to get the latest fashions, timeless styles, and gifts for children of all ages. Talking with Anne you get the sense that Gretchen’s takes great pride in dressing Atlanta’s youngsters over many generations.

While Gretchen’s is primarily known for their adorable selection of newborn and toddler clothes, their selections span all the way from preemie to pre-teen. When it’s the car ride home from the hospital or the car ride on the first day of middle school, Gretchen’s is Atlanta’s source for special occasion outfits to play clothes, swim trunks to sun bonnets, silver baby keepsakes to preteen collegiate needlepoint belts.  In this ever-changing city we call home, Gretchen’s place as the children’s shop in Atlanta has remained the same!

From school clothes, to special occasions, to swim wear - Gretchen's has it all!
