August is National Peach Month: How to Celebrate Our State Fruit

As a Georgian, there is nothing more patriotic than enjoying a plump, juicy peach. Although we claim it as our own, this lovely fruit dates back centuries to its origins in China and symbolizes luck, abundance, and protection. Since August is National Peach Month, and Georgia is the Peach State, let’s celebrate!  Here are a few fun ideas:

Read James and the Giant Peach

This classic by Roald Dahl is a children’s tale about a poor young boy who discovers the magic and new friends in an enormous piece of fruit. Once you finish the book, make some popcorn, sprinkle it with warm peach butter (just puree peaches, sugar and water and heat them in your crock pot), and rent the movie for a family night.

Take a ride on the Peachtree Trolley

Tour the Big Peach in a brand new way! The trolley will take you through many of Atlanta’s hot spots, with narration about the history and fun facts about each stop.

Visit Dickey Farms

It’s a 2-hour drive to Musella, home of Georgia’s oldest, continuously operating peach packing house. (120 years to be exact!) It is a family-friendly farm, with tours, a market, and fresh peach ice cream.

Giddy up for a Peach Cook-off and Hayride

Jaemor Farms will host the 4th Annual Peach Festival on August 5 in Alto (just an hour away). Pick peaches, take a hayride, view local arts and crafts, and watch a cow being milked in the Georgia Mobile Dairy Classroom.

Shop ‘Til You Drop at the Peachtree Road Farmer’s Market

On Wednesdays and Saturdays, you can pack up the kids and the dog and spend time at the largest producer-only farmers market in the state. Depending on the day, there are chef demonstrations, live music, and farm-to-table meals.

Treat Yourself at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Atlanta

Splurge on a Mommy Time Out in the hotel spa! Indulge in the Peaches and Cream massage – with a side of apricot exfoliation!
