We did not partner with Atlanta Art Worx for this post. This is the opinion of the contributor that had a great time learning a new activity!

Ladies, even those of us who do not have a Martha Stewart bone in our body can appreciate trying a new activity.  So, what if you could try it with a few of your friends?  OR, maybe you need a break from everyone and would rather try on your own?  Either way, Atlanta Art Worx has got you covered for learning the beginning basics of jewelry fabrication. Plus, you leave with a cool piece to wear when you are done!!

The fully functional studio, owned by Dana Ruth, is where she creates her own stunning works. She joyfully shares her space, time, and expertise with those who are ready to give basic metalsmithing, stone setting, and other techniques a try.  Her offerings include multi-session Basic Metalsmithing classes, one-day workshops focused on a particular item, one-on-one sessions, and options for open studio time.  Her website provides a fantastic calendar of what is available. And as a bonus, there are times during the week as well as on the weekends to accommodate all mama lifestyles.

In her own words, Dana’s goal is “… helping students discover their creativity and ignite a passion.  Whether doing something special for oneself or sharing a class or workshop with a friend, I hope and strive to provide a meaningful experience and skills to build on to make wonderful shiny things!”

My hubby gave me the Beginning Metalsmithing package as a gift. It covered 4 Sunday afternoons, 6 hours each.  We learned how to solder various metals and the safety components involved with using pressurized gases. We created ear wires and beautiful copper earrings. I made a cuff bracelet to learn how to handle a jeweler’s saw. And I fit a stone into a bezel setting and polished with various methods.  From this fast, but detailed introduction, I can tell you I am hooked and I have slowly started putting together my own set of tools with great plans (birthday and Christmas lists are already written).

A small, intimate space in the Artisan Resource Center (in Marietta), the studio always has good music. A precious 4-legged friend, Ollie, is happy to make sure everyone is having a great time.  Dana has a quick wit, appreciates a great joke, and is always prepared to share knowledge, tips, and demonstrate or assist.  As a distributor, Dana provides access to the best equipment and a realistic conversation about which tools will serve which purposes – always helpful when a newbie.

My favorite part?  I made my husband a silver wedding band and was able to stamp our wedding date on the inside. (And, yes, I made the Mom’s Blog pendants, too.)   So, dream up your pretty ideas for shiny things and check out Atlanta ArtWorx!!
